Supporting Recovery 
in Sensitive Protected Areas

Ascent Ecology prepared 25 Review of Environmental Factors (REFs) for the NSW NPWS Flood Team and other North Coast teams. These assessments enabled timely, compliant recovery works and upgrades across high-value, high-visitation park assets.

The Challenge

NPWS required urgent ecological input for recovery works across flood-affected sites—many located in environmentally sensitive or high-traffic public access areas. These included landslip zones, bridges, culverts and amenities. The assessments had to meet tight timeframes, strict compliance standards and a need for rapid mobilisation. Ascent Ecology’s challenge was to deliver accurate, regulator-ready reports that enabled safe and timely recovery while minimising disruption and safeguarding ecological values.

Our Solution

We conducted field inspections across multiple NPWS sites, preparing tailored REFs that addressed specific ecological and compliance needs for each project. Our reports balanced legislative rigour with site-specific recovery logistics, enabling efficient and timely submissions. Collaborating closely with NPWS, we aligned documentation with operational priorities, ensuring safety, ecological integrity and project timeframes were upheld without compromise.

The Result

All REFs were approved promptly, enabling works to proceed on time and without administrative setbacks. Our detailed assessments helped fast-track recovery efforts while maintaining full compliance with environmental regulations. The work demonstrated our capacity to operate within tight regulatory and scheduling constraints, protect sensitive ecosystems and support major infrastructure restoration across multiple park sites—delivering real results for both the client and the broader public.

    Biodiversity Assessment for New Subdivision

    In 2024–2025, Ascent Ecology was engaged to deliver ecological assessment and reporting services for a two-stage residential subdivision in Muswellbrook. The project highlights our expertise in supporting local development through delivery of a robust, regulator-ready Biodiversity Development Assessment Report (BDAR) that supported the development application.

    The Challenge

    We were engaged to support a residential subdivision project in Muswellbrook by preparing a comprehensive biodiversity assessment in compliance with stringent state and regulations. Our team conducted detailed surveys and analysis to assess the presence of threatened species and mapped key ecological habitats. By identifying areas of both sensitive and low biodiversity values early, we helped avoid unnecessary disturbance and preserve important flora and fauna habitat, delivering a practical, regulator-ready solution that supported timely project approval for 56 new residential homes.

    Our Solution

    We delivered a full-scope ecological assessment for this two-stage residential subdivision in Muswellbrook. Our team undertook comprehensive vegetation and habitat surveys, including targeted threatened species assessments. Our preliminary assessment of potential biodiversity impacts informed the proposed lot layout enabling early avoidance, minimisation of impacts on biodiversity, thereby saving costs by reducing the biodiversity credit offset obligations. Our team also prepared a complete BDAR that met all legislative requirements—supporting the client’s application with rigorous, regulator-ready documentation aligned to NSW planning frameworks and ecological best practice.

    The Result

    This work demonstrates our capacity to support local-scale projects through rigorous biodiversity impact assessment and reporting in compliance with the NSW planning framework. Our assessment safeguarded critical habitat and threatened species vital to the region’s biodiversity. Following comprehensive fieldwork, vegetation mapping, and impact assessment, our team determined that the development posed no significant risk to biodiversity, resulting in no biodiversity credit obligation. This outcome delivered both ecological confidence and regulatory clarity for the client and the consent authority.
